Q & A with Dawood Burhani

Each Interviewee provides written responses to questions prepared by webmaster, Dan Perkins.  Responses may be edited to enhance readability.

Q

What do you enjoy most about being an entrepreneur, and more specifically, enjoy about owning Kopy Kat?

A

Everyday we have new challenges.  We serve both business and retail customers, and each of our customers has unique needs.

Q

What was the journey that led you to become an entrepreneur?

A

I studied electronics in college; designed appliance controls and electronics for a diesel engine.  Along the way, I got an MBA and decided I could run a business, and jumped in.

Q
What factors or conditions pose the greatest challenges and opportunities for your business - and why?
A

The biggest factor is the constant pace of change in our industry, which is due to advancements in technology.  Rapid advancements in technology has both helped and hurt our sales.

Q

You are in a competitive industry.  What do you do to help Kopy Kat standout?

A

It's all about CUSTOMER SERVICE.  We are very concerned with our customers' needs: quality, price and timely delivery.  We like to get to know our customers, work with them, and have them think of Jamali Kopy Kat as their partner.  Once we get to know a customer, when appropriate, we might help them keep track of their print inventory and inform them of when an item runs short.

Q

How would you like for your business to grow over the next five years?

A

I would like to figure out how we can increase our sales in the promotional items market.  I think there's a lot of opportunity there, especially in serving local businesses.

Q

You serve on the boards of multiple chambers of commerce.  What makes the Maywood Chamber distinct?

A

Both Maywood and Bellwood have similar hurdles: retention of current members and recruiting new members.  Understanding that dynamic is a perspective I bring to both chambers.  I face the same hurdles.

Q
Who were the greatest influences on you as a young person, in high school, or college?  How did those influences shape your development?
A

My parents have had the greatest influence on me.  They moved to this country, a new country and overcame many hardships in order for my sister and me to have better opportunities.

Q
What is the number one item on your "Bucket List"?
A

I love to travel; but if I can get my nerve up, I would like to skydive.

Q
Is there something about you that most people don't know, but you would like for them to know?
A

I love to participate in sports.  I am open for any game.  I also love to watch sports.  You can find me, most Sundays, on the couch, watching football for hours.
